I obviously damaged some nerves and the nail went black and there was blood and a few bad words but I was a mess when it happened.....could not bend the finger for weeks........the last of the nail came off a few weeks ago and the new nail is growing slowly and causing a few issues as it does..... But finally on the weekend I had a go and it was OK.....still some issues with finger..... Just bits at a time is OK though.......

God Controls The Weather Children's Lesson

This is the first of two children's Bible lessons about God's control over the earth.  This first lesson is about weather and the second one is about the seasons. I chose these two topics because there are plenty of Bible verses and stories and plenty of hands-on activities for both. I had broken each lesson into two sections: one for all the kids (as young as three) and one for the older kids (probably 8 and up).

While I created this lesson for a children's Bible class at a Bible conference, it could easily be used for homeschooling either as a whole lesson or just selecting some of the activities or printables with your curriculum.

God Controls The Weather

Introduction:
To introduce the topic of God being in control of nature, I read Psalm 104 and had them draw what I read. I had a large tablet (like an easel pad). Here are some of their drawings.

Drawings of Psalm 104 for God Controls The Weather Children's Lesson | scriptureand.blogspot.com

Water Cycle Video:
We watched a video to introduce the water cycle. I used "The Great Aqua Adventure" by Crash Course Kids. You could use a different video about the water cycle.

Water Cycle In A Bag:
I found this awesome experiment that lets kids see the water cycle with their own eyes. All you have to do is pour some water in a bag and tape it to a window that gets lots of sunlight. Then you can just sit back and watch the water cycle.

Rain In A Jar:
I just included this activity because it looked like fun and illustrated to the younger ones how clouds can get "full" and start raining. The best part is they get to use pipettes or eye droppers - and kids love pipettes. All you need is jars or cups of water, shaving cream, pipettes or eye droppers, and food coloring.
Cloud In A Jar from The STEM Labroatory

Weather In The Bible Activity:
Print out a set of the Weather Icons for each student (or you could give each student one icon) and glue them to popsicle sticks. Then, read the Bible verses from the list on this matching sheet and have the students hold up the icon for each weather when they hear it mentioned or described. Alternatively, you can print on the matching sheet and just have them match, but I usually like to give the students a chance to move around instead of just complete worksheets. The point in most of these verses is that God used weather to accomplish His purposes.

God Controls The Weather - For Older Students

How Much Does A Cloud Hold:
I found this fun experiment from the National Weather Service that helps kids visualize how much water is in clouds. And they get to use pipettes again! Basically, you count how many drops you can drop onto a cotton ball before it reaches capacity and starts dripping. You can have them hypothesize beforehand how many drops will fit and also see who can get their cotton ball to hold the most. Of course, clouds aren't made of cotton (actually a cloud is formed by water droplets bonding to dust and pollen in the atmosphere), water droplets are much smaller than the drops released from pipettes or eye droppers, and an updraft helps a cloud hold more water, but this activity gives them an idea of just how much water a cloud can hold.

The Water Cycle In The Bible:
If you are focusing on teaching the vocabulary for the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff) and demonstrate that each of these is discussed in the Bible, this activity will work well for older students. Print out this worksheet. Then, have them cut off the vocabulary words and Bible verses and glue them to the proper location in the picture.

The Water Cycle In The Bible Worksheet | scriptureand.blogspot.com

Discussion:
It's great to see if the students can process the ideas from the lesson, so I ended this lesson with a discussion about the purpose behind the water cycle (in other words, Why did God create water to go through the water cycle?).
  1. Who needs water? How do they use it? (plants need water; animals and humans drink it)
  2. What does the water cycle do to the water? How does it benefit the water and us? (it purifies it - like distillation - and moves it to different locations; this gives us fresh water and brings water from oceans to inland)
  3. What else does the water cycle affect? How else does it change nature? (Runoff causes erosion and sedimentation which causes in geography like deltas at mouths of rivers and canyons exposing new minerals)

Here is a printout of the whole lesson, but feel free to pick and choose from the activities for what best fits your students and your time. You can also check out my pinterest board on this subject.

Bible Verses for Jesus Messiah

Jesus Messiah

by Chris Tomlin, Daniel Carson, Ed Cash, Jesse Reeves

Verse 1:
He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His righteousness
2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
He humbled himself and carried the cross
About Jesus in Philippians 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
John 19:17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
Love so amazing, love so amazing
Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

Chorus 1:
Jesus Messiah, name above all names
Philippians 2:9-11 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Blessed Redeemer, Immanuel
Galatians 4:4-5 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Matthew 1:23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear A Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which translated means, God with us.
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from heaven
1 Timothy 1:15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.

Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
Acts 10:36 The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ [Messiah] (He is Lord of all)

Verse 2:
His body the bread, His blood the wine
1 Corinthians 10:16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?
Broken and poured out all for love
Jesus said in 1 Corinthians 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Matthew 26:27-28 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.
The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn
Matthew 27:50-51 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
Love so amazing, love so amazing, yeah
Ephesians 3:17-19 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Bridge:
All our hope is in You, all our hope is in You
1 Timothy 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
Colossians 1:27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
All the glory to You, God, the light of the world
Revelation 1:5-6 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Fatherto Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
John 8:12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.

Chorus 2:
Jesus Messiah, name above all names
Ephesians 1:19-21 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Blessed Redeemer, Immanuel
Titus 2:13-14 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Hebrews 9:12 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from heaven
Mark 2:17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.
Jesus said in Mark 10: 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.

Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
Andrew speaking to his brother Peter about Jesus, in John 1:41 He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which translated means Christ).
Romans 10:12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;

Old Testament Overview Review

When I was in college, I went to some Walk Thru The Bible seminars. They have this awesome program where you can go through the Old or New Testament in one day. It gives a really good overview of the Bible. It inspired me to teach my Sunday School an overview of the Bible, a few books a week. Like Walk Thru The Bible, we focused on keywords for each book and overall themes.

At the end of the Old Testament, I wanted to review all of the themes of the books, so I made this worksheet that has you match verses with the books of the Bible. I left out 1 and 2 Chronicles because it is difficult to separate it from other books (especially 1 and 2 Kings) and there are two other unused books.

This is a great way to process the keywords, topics, people, and themes from each book of the Bible. You can do it on your own, with your family, or use it in your Sunday School class or small group. It's great for reviewing after reading the Bible in a year. Better yet, try this before you read the Bible and then again after to see how much you've learned.

Of course, it is a challenge, especially if you haven't reviewed keywords or themes of the books of the Bible (OT39 is a great system if you want to learn the books of the Bible that way). Also, watching videos from The Bible Project will definitely help you get great overviews of entire books of the Bible.

However, this activity can help you sort out what you do know about the Old Testament and help you learn more. Don't get discouraged if you don't know an answer yet. The importance isn't your final score, but interacting with the ideas and the learning along the way. The keywords for each of the books of the Bible in the final sheet may help and once you've done what you can without help you can try to use that to help.

Bible Verses for Death Was Arrested

The tombstone of Samuel Burr in Saint Marys, Georgia reads:
Here rests what was mortal of Samuel Burr, age 42.
In search of health far from his endeared home, Death arrested his progress on April the 2nd, 1831.Quietly he fell asleep in the Christian hope of immortality and glory forever. Oh, the vanity of man in his best estate. Traveler pause and drop a tear at a grave Of one so worthy and so deeply lamented and learn wisdom for eternity."

The inscription on this tombstone stuck with Brandon Coker for more than two years before a discussion with Adam Kersh, Heath Balltzglier, and Paul Taylor led to the writing of the song Death Was Arrested. The song turns on the idea that death doesn't arrest the progress of life (like Samuel Burr's tombstone says), but Jesus has arrested death and so a believer's death is the beginning of a new chapter. For believers, eternal life continues after we die on this earth, but it begins the moment we believe in Christ and his death for our sin (John 3:16).

Death Was Arrested

by Adam Kersh, Brandon Coker, Heath Balltzglier, and Paul Taylor

Verse 1:
Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin,
Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Lost without hope with no place to begin,
Jesus said in Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
Ephesians 2:4-8 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
When death was arrested and my life began.
1 Corinthians 15:54-57 But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Verse 2:
Ash was redeemed only beauty remains,
Isaiah 61:3 To grant those who mourn in Zion, giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
My orphan heart was given a name,
Isaiah 65:15 You will leave your name for a curse to My chosen ones, And the Lord God will slay you. But My servants will be called by another name.
Revelation 2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.
My mourning grew quiet my feet rose to dance
Psalm 30:11-12 You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, that my soul may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.
When death was arrested and my life began
Isaiah 25:8 He will swallow up death for all time, and the Lord God will wipe tears away from all faces, and He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the Lord has spoken.

Chorus:

Oh your grace so free washes over me
Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
You have made me new now life begins with you
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
It's your endless love pouring down on us
Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.
You have made us new now life begins with you

Verse 3:
Released from my chains I'm a prisoner no more
About Jesus in Luke 4:17-19 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon ME, because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.
My shame was a ransom he faithfully bore
Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 13:13 So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach.
He canceled my debt and he called me his friend
1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
Jesus said in John 15:15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
When death was arrested and my life began
1 Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

Verse 4:
Our Savior displayed on a criminal's cross
Luke 23:33 When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
Darkness rejoiced as though heaven had lost
Luke 23:44-45 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two.
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
About Jesus in Ephesians 4:8 Therefore it says, When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.
That's when death was arrested and my life began
That's when death was arrested and my life began
2 Timothy 1:10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,

Chorus:
Oh your grace so free washes over me
You have made me new now life begins with you
It's your endless love pouring down on us
You have made us new now life begins with you

Bridge:
We're free, free, forever we're free.
Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
Come join the song of all the redeemed.
Revelation 5:9-10 (KJV) And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.
Yes, we're free, free, forever. Amen.
Hebrews 2:14-15 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.
When death was arrested and my life began.
Revelation 20:14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
