Something New Sunday...

Do your students need work with understanding the various representations of quantities? Here is a Kindergarten math center activity that will assist children with the concept of number and quantity.

When I taught Kindergarten, we learned so much about number sense through our Number Talks. In addition to those in depth conversations, students need constant practice and exposure to quantities. They need the foundation and understanding that a quantity can look different, yet be the same amount.

Mega Math Set ~ Counting Sheep

Spent a couple days here and there on this new set.

It is so important to build a strong foundation in number sense using manipulatives. Here are some sheets that can be used in guiding students with the understanding of numbers. I HIGHLY recommend using some type of counter with this set (or even make several copies of the sheep provided in the set) so children can manipulate with numbers and quantities.

This is a large set that covers the following Kindergarten mathematics areas:

ALL Kindergarten standards in these categories... 

* COUNTING AND CARDINALITY 
* OPERATIONS AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING
* NUMBERS AND OPERATIONS IN BASE TEN

The theme is a Counting Sheep theme.

Another Arctic Blast is on the Way... O_o

Okay... is there any one (besides myself) that is freaking out with all the winter weather in the south? Don't get me wrong, I love a little snow here and there, but the fact is, I have to finish this novel THIS week!!! EEK! We have a couple of weeks before our GA State Writing Assessment, and I wanted to model a mock test before then and go over some loose ends. How are you managing the make up of weather in your neck of the woods?

One of my colleagues sent this to our group this week & it made me laugh, as I am having to take a few more ibuprofen due to increased headaches lately... or is it the change in weather? Hmmm...

Figurative Language Fun {Valentine Style}

When I taught Kindergarten, we had a lot of Valentine activities planned. In 5th grade, we are too busy digging deep in our novel that I have barely thought of it! In case we have a little time, I wanted to create something that my 5th graders could work on that is Valentine related, yet educational. We have been working diligently on pulling figurative language from our novel, so I thought that would be a great connection to Valentine's Day! Here are a few little figurative language activities!

Winter Animal Writing Graphic Organizers

Don't want to handle 6 more weeks...

Really?!? Blah... I do love a little bit of snow and winter time feel, but I am through with it for a while! I am ready to get out my capri pants (keep my flip flops out year round... just in case I need them ;). Saw this when I awoke this morning... phooey! Does anyone know how often he is correct? I hope he's wrong this year... LOL!

Figuratively Speaking...

The more we work with figurative language (FL), the better my students get with it. We have been reading Out of the Dust and pulling our different examples of different types of figurative language. By the end of our reading each day, they must have pulled 2 different examples from the text, decide the type, tell how they determined the type, and explained the meaning. When we first began, students were getting them mixed up. After a week and a half for practice and stopping and modeling with the students, they are getting MUCH better!! Now, I want them to work more independently with digging deeper to understand the different types of figurative language. Here is a set I created to allow students to work with and dig deeper... Students will read a short passage, find 2 examples of FL, and explain how they determined the type. In addition, they will 'HUNT' for FL in their text (any text) and do the same. It is not only important to identify FL, they must be able to explain the meaning AND explain how they know it is that particular type (I do not want them guessing)! I love (haha) February, as it is the month of LOVE! There is still so much to do this school year, and with snow days and all, I feel even further behind... anyone else? EEK!

Retelling Stories using 'Key' Ideas

This is a fun and creative way to have students retell key ideas from stories (K & 1st grade CCRL2). 

ELACCKRL2: With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, 
including key details. 

ELACC1RL2: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate 
understanding of their central message or lesson. 

After reading a story aloud, have students write key details on the key templates. One key detail per key. They can write on one side and illustrate on the other. **Note: I would copy keys on thick paper or card stock**

Once they complete each key detail, they cut the keys out and string them on either a chenille stem, pipe cleaner, ring hook, etc. Now, students have their story (in order), so they can retell the key details from the story. Click the image to get a copy from my TpT page. Thanks in advance:)

It is COLD here in Georgia AND we had 3 SNOW DAYS!!! I do not mind a little snow, like we had. Although I did enjoy those few days off and a little fun in the snow, I am SO ready for Spring! Anyone else?? Here are a few snow days pics:

I tried the panoramic photo option with my phone... it makes the house look bent...LOL!! This was a shot when the snow just began to stick. 

I now have a TpT shop & Facebook page. Might as well join along since I have been creating items since 2003! Go check them out if you have the chance! Never had the need to have the FB page in the past, so hopefully I can keep up with it, my own personal account, AND the page for our school! LOL!

Read a little further in our class novel, Out of the Dust, and I am very much enjoying this text! There is so much figurative language. My students are having to search throughout the text to identify different types of figurative language AND they must provide 2 examples, giving the type and meaning, as their Exit ticket.

How is BYOT going since we began on January 21st? Wonderfully!! We are slowly implementing different apps. One thing we have tried first is our exit tickets though Edmodo. Edmodo is my new best friend. The quiz portion is easy to use (and grade to give feedback), and when students turn in their exit tickets through Edmodo, I can give them very quick feedback!! They then take my feedback and make adjustments immediately! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend using Edmodo! Here are examples of exit tickets with figurative language and our novel. 

I RARELY miss work, but took today off to spend time with my daughter on her field trip to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus!! We had never seen their show. They did NOT disappoint. It was amazing! Here are a few shots:
