Bible Verses for No Longer Slaves

No Longer Slaves

I recently heard this song and was greatly encouraged by it.  The song is a reflection of God delivering Moses and the Israelites from slavery by the Egyptians.  When the Egyptians pursued them after their departure and the Israelites were trapped between an army and the Red Sea, they were frightened.  Then, Moses told them not to be afraid.  That God would fight for them and all they needed to do is stand and watch Him work.

Then came the moment that was sung about for generations. God showed His people that He loved them enough to save them from the Egyptians whom they feared would enslave them again.  After they were delivered, Moses and the people broke out in song.

However, the writers are obviously not singing about their miraculous deliverance from Egypt. They are singing about our deliverance from the bondage of fear.  How Christ delivers us.

Check out Jonathan and Melissa Helser talking about their song in this video:

Though I love this song, I do wish that it had more reference to Christ's work on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins... and maybe less about our feelings as we respond.  Check it out and see what you think.

Bible Verses for No Longer Slaves
Written by Brian Johnson, Jonathan David Helser, Joel Case

Verse 1:
You unravel me, with a melody
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance, from my enemies
Till all my fears are gone
Psalms 32:7 You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble;
You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.
Isaiah 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.

Chorus:
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I'm no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
Galatians 4:7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
1 John 3:1-2 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.

Verse 2:
From my mother's womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
Isaiah 49:1 Listen to Me, O islands, and pay attention, you peoples from afar. The Lord called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me.
I've been born again, into your family
Your blood flows through my veins*
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Ephesians 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of Gods household

Interlude:
I am surrounded
By the arms of the Father
In the parable of the prodigal son, Luke 15:20 So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.
I am surrounded
By songs of deliverance
Psalms 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord.
We've been liberated
From our bondage
Galatians 4:3-5 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
We're the sons and the daughters
2 Corinthians 6:18 And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty.
Let us sing our freedom
Galatians 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

Bridge:
You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
Psalm 136:13-14 To Him who divided the Red Sea asunder, For His lovingkindness is everlasting, And made Israel pass through the midst of it, For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
Matthew 19:24-26 "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" And looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
My fears were drowned in perfect love
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
You rescued me
and I will stand and sing
Psalms 96:2 Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
I am a child of God
John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

* God's blood flowing through believer's veins is not something from the Bible.  I assume this phrase is an overstated assumption based on us being God's children as earthly families are said to have the same blood in their veins.  I would change these words to "Your blood shed for my sake."
