Reading/ELA Detailed Vocabulary Mini-Posters 5th Grade

I have been working on these for quite a while and have FINALLY finished! I would work on them here and there, but they are a great resource, so I wanted to finished them before school begins!!


With being new to the 5th grade standards, I wanted to dig deeper into the Georgia Teacher's guide for 5th grade Reading/ELA to get acquainted with the standards and learn the new vocabulary. These are a tool for me, as well as for the students. I will have these somewhere (not sure just yet) to where the students can reference them during lessons (and so I can refer to them). I wanted to provide some type of visual or example, to help trigger my memory of the word's meaning (and it will hopefully help the students to picture what the words mean).

These are words from the 5th grade standards for Reading/ELA from the Georgia Teacher Guidance document.

Once you click the arrow-type icon, a box will pop up with the embedded code. Copy the code.

Head on over to your blogger post and embed it in the HTML in the place you want it.

***NOTE: You must have your Instagram settings OFF on Posts are Private (under Edit Your Profile: Posts Are Private: OFF -- see below) for your video to be viewable through your blogger post.

 

Teacher Tour Tuesday (has begun)...

I am super excited to begin this new linky:

 

 

I love, love, love to see tours of classrooms through pictures, but wouldn't it be great to also do short video clips of each little section of your room? This way, you can add short commentary about what you are showing! Instagram now has the video feature, and since they launched this feature, I have wanted to do this linky. What do you need to do?

• Create a short video clip focusing on one area of things in your classroom in Instagram (see tutorial here)
• Upload the video to Instagram with hasgtag #teachertourtuesday
• Write a post directing us to watch your clip on your Instagram page (or embed the video into your blog)
• Link up each Tuesday with a NEW short clip - by the end of the linky, we will have seen a complete tour of your wonderful classroom!!!?

Tuesday Tour (Coming this Tuesday)!! and Instagram Video Tutorial

Once Instagram made public the new video feature, I so badly wanted to do a classroom tour video linky!! Several folks are already getting into their classrooms (not me - they are still working on floors, etc. - pooey). It would be great to do a short video tour of a section of your room each week to showcase your wonderful classroom d�cor!! Even though I haven't begun decorating, I cannot wait to watch the short clips each week and get some great ideas!! Don't know how to use Instagram's video feature? Here is a quick tutorial:

 

1) Log In (haha...LOL - I amuse myself sometimes...)

2) Click on the camera icon:

 

 

3) Click on the video icon:

 

 

4) Press and hold the RED record button (you can do a video in one shot, or stop and do a few clips). All together, I believe it is a 30 second video clip.

 

 

5) Once the video segment is completed, click next... You can change the look of the video (play around with it until you see one you like. Then click next.

 

 

 

6) Choose a beginning image for your video (slide the blue box until it lands on an image you like). The click NEXT.

 

 

7) Now, there are a few things you can do here, but I 'arrowed' the most main thing - the others are optional. You can put a quick description and then press share (it goes to your followers). In addition, you can share it on Twitter, Email, Facebook, etc. You can also put your location, but I never use that - dangerous, I think!

Reading Responses: Summary and Reflection

In order to meet the 5th grade standards: ELA5R1 & ELA5R5, students need to read a variety of texts and response to those texts. Students need to begin to reflect and summarize, pinpointing specifics within the text. In addition, they should be able to use questioning strategies to help them better understand what they read. Here is a bookmark (Five Fingers Rule) to assist students in finding just right texts, as well as a Reading Response Log for students to record their summaries and reflections to the texts they read.


The students must record the title, author, # of minutes read, genre, and whether the text was E=Easy, JR=Just Right, or C=Challenging for each entry. Our students will be required to read and respond 3 times each week (which is why there are three spaces), which will be due on Fridays.

Calling all Chevron Lovers...

Okay, Chevron fans... I purchased this chevron rug at Wal-Mart a couple of days ago. It will pull in the lavender and sage colors of my wall and tie in nicely with my curtains (pictures in the future). I have been searching for one of these & it is just the right size... 36in x 56in. I needed something for a small reading area where my little couch (donated to me by a friend) will be housed. I cannot wait to get into the room soon to begin designing!! I am not chevron crazy, but think it is cute!! Not everything in my room has to be chevron, but a little touch doesn't hurt

Want a classroom website, but not the headache of all the codes, etc...? I just completed a design for a non-profit organization - she wanted it to be created in Blogger, but look like a website instead of a blog (see below). Writing Commentary

Providing students with specific and timely feedback is extremely important in any subject. Why is feedback so important?

In order to grow, students need to know along the way what they are doing that they should continue doing and what next steps they need in order to get on the right track. They need this throughout their learning - not just at the beginning, and the end is TOO late! Ongoing feedback is what keeps their motors running and keeps them going on the correct path.

When do you have time to give feedback? This is something that I have had to play with along the way. I give feedback at different times of the day and not always at a scheduled time or day. As students enter the classroom and begin morning work is a great time. During class time when students are working on particular pieces of work. When students finish early. Any down time that you can find!!! I use rainy days to catch up, when needed.

In the past, I have given feedback orally and written - primarily oral, as I taught non-readers. Now that I will be in the upper grades, I want to have something tangible that students can refer back to, to help me know what I met with them about in the past, and to help us both see growth over time. I made this quick writing commentary sheet that I hope someone else will be able to use. I plan to have students place this in their Writer's Notebook (see sheet below).

The sheet focuses on the 6 Traits of writing, which will be one of the goals students will track. In addition, I have a place to mark which genre you comment on and an area for 2 stars (things they did well) and one next step (things to work on).

What type of comments do you give? I like to show them what they know and what they need to work on. What is MOST important is that you are SPECIFIC!

DO NOT: Great Job! Nice work! Keep it up! A+ 100%, etc... What does this tell them? Nothing.

Instead DO this:
You remembered to use a conjunction when combining your two sentences.
Thank you for using correct punctuation.
I see that you used commas in a series, but do you remember other times we need a comma?
Is there a tool you can use to help you choose chunkier words?

When giving feedback ALWAYS tell them something positive and something to work on.

What a great way to show different examples/proof of figurative language. I was thinking about having a page like this in their interactive notebooks, where they can easily jot them down, as well. This wonderful idea is from Head over Heals for Teaching.

 

I have been looking for items I will be teaching for the first time in 5th grade and during our first unit. One thing is interjections. I thought this was a great way to have fun, while applying what they have learned. Sadly, this post is no longer available, but it was from The Peanut Gallery.

Supposedly written shortly after Charles Wesley understood salvation was by grace through faith and was saved, the classic hymn "And Can It Be?" shows the awe of what Jesus would do for our salvation.
