Retelling Stories using 'Key' Ideas

This is a fun and creative way to have students retell key ideas from stories (K & 1st grade CCRL2).

ELACCKRL2: With prompting and support, retell familiar stories,
including key details.

ELACC1RL2: Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate
understanding of their central message or lesson.

After reading a story aloud, have students write key details on the key templates. One key detail per key. They can write on one side and illustrate on the other. **Note: I would copy keys on thick paper or card stock**

Once they complete each key detail, they cut the keys out and string them on either a chenille stem, pipe cleaner, ring hook, etc. Now, students have their story (in order), so they can retell the key details from the story. Click the image to get a copy from my TpT page. Thanks in advance:)

Five for Friday... brrrr!

Linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday. It has been a CRAZY week! Link up below:

It is COLD here in Georgia AND we had 3 SNOW DAYS!!! I do not mind a little snow, like we had. Although I did enjoy those few days off and a little fun in the snow, I am SO ready for Spring! Anyone else?? Here are a few snow days pics:

I tried the panoramic photo option with my phone... it makes the house look bent...LOL!! This was a shot when the snow just began to stick.

I now have a TpT shop & Facebook page. Might as well join along since I have been creating items since 2003! Go check them out if you have the chance! Never had the need to have the FB page in the past, so hopefully I can keep up with it, my own personal account, AND the page for our school! LOL!

Read a little further in our class novel, Out of the Dust, and I am very much enjoying this text! There is so much figurative language. My students are having to search throughout the text to identify different types of figurative language AND they must provide 2 examples, giving the type and meaning, as their Exit ticket.

How is BYOT going since we began on January 21st? Wonderfully!! We are slowly implementing different apps. One thing we have tried first is our exit tickets though Edmodo. Edmodo is my new best friend. The quiz portion is easy to use (and grade to give feedback), and when students turn in their exit tickets through Edmodo, I can give them very quick feedback!! They then take my feedback and make adjustments immediately! If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend using Edmodo! Here are examples of exit tickets with figurative language and our novel.

I RARELY miss work, but took today off to spend time with my daughter on her field trip to see the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus!! We had never seen their show. They did NOT disappoint. It was amazing! Here are a few shots:

Hope you had a wonderful week!! Hello weekend!! :)

Close Reading the Standards

How do you clearly communicate the standards and learning targets to your students?

The Georgia teacher evaluation system lists the following for element 3:

3. Instructional Strategies: The teacher promotes student learning by using research-based instructional strategies relevant to the content
to engage students in active learning and to facilitate the students acquisition of key knowledge and skills.

3.1 Engages students in active learning and maintains interest.
3.2 Builds upon students existing knowledge and skills.
3.3 Reinforces learning goals consistently throughout the lesson.
3.4 Uses a variety of research-based instructional strategies and resources.
3.5 Effectively uses appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning.
3.6 Communicates and presents material clearly, and checks for understanding.
3.7 Develops higher-order thinking through questioning and problem-solving activities.
3.8 Engages students in authentic learning by providing real-life examples and interdisciplinary connections.

I am really focusing on 3.6 in this post. Are you truly communicating the standards clearly and explicitly for students? Do students REALLY know what it is they are to show they know and are able to apply? Many times we THINK they know, but in actuality, they do not. How can we ensure students CLEARLY understand what we are asking them to know and be able to do?

Close reading the standards WITH students allows them the opportunity to dig deeper and really investigate the words within the standards, so that the targets are clear to them BEFORE they begin any work. Can we expect them to be successful without a clear understanding of what it is we want them to know and be able to do? Of course not! Many times, it is this very thing that can make or break your lesson. We may have the perfect lesson planned (or so we think), but then it go terribly wrong. Could it be that they really didn't understand what we were asking of them? Sure.

To keep this from happening, closely read and break down the standards together. Hold them accountable for knowing what it is they are responsible for showing, producing, etc. I have created a document with each standard on a separate page for you and your students to work through standards as you come to them. When I begin any lesson, we take at least 5-10 (even more depending on the depth of the standard) to figure out what the standard is really asking of us. I feel confident that this is time WELL spent! I conducted these same type of conversations with my Kindergarten students, so it can be done at ANY grade level. This is a 5th grade standards set. I hope (if there is interest) in creating the same for other grade levels. This would be great to have for each child in a notebook, so they can constantly refer back to the standard throughout the year (since we do not teach it only once).

Included in this set are all 5th grade READING/ELA standards, each on a separate page for students to take notes during the close reading and then in the end, they will put the target in their own words. There are 74 pages, directions on how to use, and a sample of how the conversation might sound during the close read. Please visit my TpT page to purchase.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God

A Mighty Fortress is Our God is a hymn that was written in 1529 by Martin Luther, a leader in the German Reformation.  The original German ("Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott") is now written on the tower of the Schlosskirche (Castle Church) in Wittenberg where Luther nailed his 95 Theses.

Here are two youtube videos of the song.  One is a classic version with an organ.  When I hear this song in my head, it has an organ accompanying it.  The second video is a contemporary version by Chris Rice which is a fresh take on this beautiful hymn.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God
by Martin Luther in 1529

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;

Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
Psalm 54:4 Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
God said to Satan in Genesis 3:15 "And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."
1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
Hebrews 2:14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil
On earth is not his equal.
1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;

Romans 5:6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of Gods own choosing:
2 Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
1 John 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
Romans 9:29 And just as Isaiah foretold, "Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left to us a posterity, we would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah."
James 5:4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.
And He must win the battle.
1 John 3:8b The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,

Ephesians 6:12  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
1 John 2:14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
Of Jesus in Colossians 1:13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
Revelation 20:10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
One little word shall fell him.
Hebrews 2:14-15 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;

Of Jesus in John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Of Jesus in John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Jesus said of the Holy Spirit in John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you."
Of Jesus in Ephesians 4:8 Therefore it says, "When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men."
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
Jesus said in Matthew 19:29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life."
Matthew 16:24-25 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it."
The body they may kill: Gods truth abideth still,
Jesus said in Matthew 10:28 "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
His kingdom is forever.
Of Jesus in Luke 1:33 "and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever."

Morning Message (K-5)

Morning message CAN be a very important learning tool IF it is used correctly. Having a morning message without a purpose is pointless. First of all, why have a morning message time? Teachers have different purposes for their morning message. Many use it to introduce or practice skills. Others use it as a good morning group time message. Some do not really know why they do it, they have just seen it being done and put a message up.

Morning message can be a powerful tool. How? By embedding many skills throughout the message, you can teach and reteach with ease. After thinking a lot about morning message time when I taught Kindergarten, the purpose was primarily for catching writing mistakes. Now that I teach 5th grade, there are many skills that can be touched upon during that time, which will SAVE you time later... and allow you to formatively assess students' knowledge of certain standards.

This is the first set I have made, which is designed for use in K-2nd grades. I am working on a version for grade 3-5, as well. In this 36 week set, teachers can use one message per week. Throughout the week, I have listed certain skills to work on that are embedded throughout each message. Here is a sneak peek. You can purchase this set in the K, 1st, or 2nd grade in my shop at the grade level links above.

Show What I Know Menu

I have seen some menus out there, but I really needed a menu with a technological twist. I created this menu and changed it up a bit to try to fit others. The one I created for myself has actual quotes and information from the text Out of the Dust that we are reading (such a great book, so far)! After reading a bit, I will give the students a few days to work on the tasks. We will use menus occasionally, so they can show what they know or do not know. This way, I can adjust instruction to meet their needs. What I love about these menus is that students can be as creative as they wish (use an app, online program, the typical paper/pencil way, etc.). I just hope that children will enjoy "showing what they know" in creative ways!

Here is a little peek. Please go to the 5th grade link above to purchase. Thanks! If you need a different one, let me know.

*This menu has 6 activities for students to complete:
Figurative Language, Vocabulary, Inferencing,
Textual Evidence, Text Structure, and Sentence Structure -
all with a technology twist or complete typical way*

Well, I never said I would do it, but...

Sadly, I will no longer offer all my items for free. I have decided to begin selling my teacher items. I spend a lot of time creating them and really, REALLY need the extra funds to spend in my classroom. Consider this my TpT store! I hope and pray that my loyal followers (all you wonderful folks out there) will support me in my efforts to earn a little bit for my school kiddos. All the items I have on my site have been adjusted to reflect a price. I appreciate you all for following me in all my adventures here and hope you will continue. The plan is to create items for K-5th grades. If there is something you would like that I have not created, you can just ask me here: http://ask.fm/kfulbright

Since I have just begun selling my items, I am in the process of creating Paypal buttons for all items. Until then, please email me if you would like to purchase something, and I will send a Paypal invoice.

Five for Friday!

Been a L..O..N..G while since I have posted a 5 for Friday post. I have been super busy this past fall getting into the 'groove' of teaching a new grade level - 5th grade. I am feeling pretty good about how it has progressed, but there is still so much to learn. #1 to me in any classroom is building positive relationships with students - this is of utmost importance and I feel confident that I have accomplished this with my students. It was pretty easy in Kindergarten, as they LOVE their teacher!!! With 5th grade, it took a little more work in that you have to really build an environment of trust. There are more years of disappointment that they may have gone through that you have to wound in order to gain that trust. We have 77 days left to fill their brains with knowledge that will assist them in becoming College and Career ready ... so here goes!!

Let me share 5 things from this week:

It has been an awfully busy week - even though it has been a 3 day week for me - Tuesday was a planning day and it took my colleague and I almost the entire day to write our 3rd quarter Reading and Writing units... but we feel really good about them!! We are reading Out of the Dust, working with figurative language. During writing, we are working on our last type of writing (Informational) and preparing ourselves for the GA Writing Assessment (beginning of March - yikes)!

My colleague and I are piloting the BYOT at our school and we begin implementation on the 21st!! We are SO very excited. Our students will have the same opportunities as other districts to explore learning in various ways!

This may sound silly, but I absolutely LOVE solving picture puzzles, word problem, etc. (not math - math isn't my thing). Well, I found this free app and I cannot stop playing it. It is peaceful to come home and wind down by playing this game (okay, I am a total NERD):

Flow Free

My sweet girl was super excited this week when she FINALLY got her ears pierced! She had been begging for a while, but we wanted her to be a little older to make the decision. Santa gave her a certificate if she was ready... she was a trooper!

We are preparing for BYOT, so we worked on a team-building activity yesterday. Students had to work together to put together a 100 piece puzzle WITHOUT talking. They could not take pieces from others, but could offer a piece. They began with a few pieces each. By the end (when we discussed what we learned from the activity) students realized that the more they gave to another, the quicker their puzzle came together. It was an eye-opening experience for my students. They enjoyed it very much and learned a good deal about themselves, others, and how important it is to work as a team!
