According to Thy Gracious Word


One of Jesus' last requests of his disciples before he went to the cross was that they "do this in remembrance of me."  How wonderful to fulfill our Savior's "dying request"!

According to Thy gracious word,
In deep humility,
This will I do, my dying Lord,
I will remember Thee.
1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 

Thy body, broken for my sake,
My bread from heaven shall be;
Jesus said John 6:50-51 "This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh."
Thy blood my peace, this cup I take,
And thus remember Thee.
Of Jesus in Colossians 1:20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

Gethsemane can I forget?
Or there Thy sorrow see,
Thine agony and bloody sweat,
And not remember Thee?
Of Jesus in Luke 22:41-44  And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and began to pray, saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done." Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

When to the cross I turn mine eyes
And rest on Calvary,
O Lamb of God, blest Sacrifice,
I must remember Thee-
Hebrews 7:26-27 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

Remember Thee and all Thy pains
And all Thy love to me;
Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains,
I will remember Thee.
1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.

DIY Christmas Presents



Here are some things that I have made that make great gifts.  Since Christmas is coming up, I would like to share the ideas.  I'm really not that crafty and have minimal sewing skills, so if I could make these you really could too.  Where possible, I've tried to include a link to a tutorial.

Made with fabric markers and black acrylic paint.
I drew the buildings on white fabric, cut them with a zig-zag scissors and sewed them on.

Decoupage white fabric around a glass candle holder.
Print out profile pictures on cardstock.
Cut out the person and paint the picture black.
Decoupage the silhouette onto the fabric.
Add a few more layers of decoupage to seal everything.

Made similarly to the candle holders, but I decoupaged them onto ceramic ornaments.

Colossians 3:12 - Lesson 6 - Wrap Up

Lesson 6: Wrap-up for Col. 3:12
Story: Putting on the virtues
Bible Passage: Col. 3:12

Game:  Colossians 3:12 �Put it on� Game



Supplies: 
Paper Dolls from Making Friends Clothes (printed out from the links below)
�Put on the virtues� die 
Glue stick  
Before the lesson, cut out the die and fold it and glue it together.  Also, print the paper dolls and clothes (one of each for each child).  During the lesson, give each child a paper doll and put the clothes in the middle of the table.  Then, have them take turns rolling the die and placing the clothes on the doll (do not glue them down yet).  If they roll �put 1 back,� they pick one piece of clothing to take off their doll.  The first one to have their doll fully clothed wins.  After, they are done let them color the clothes and glue them on their doll.

Game:  Colossians 3:12 Taboo (for older kids � or in a mixed group, just have the younger ones guess)



Supplies: 
Compassion 3:12 Taboo Cards printout
Buzzer/Bell (optional)
Play Compassion 3:12 Taboo.  Print out the cards ahead of time.  You can try to play the way you would with regular Taboo.  However, with a smaller mixed group, it may be difficult to have teams and for some of the kids being the speaker may be too hard. The kids should try to get the other kids to say the word at the top of the card without using the other words on the card.  If you have enough kids, one can try to catch the speaker saying a word on the card. 

Discussion:
Read Colossians 3:8-14.  What did God tell us to take off?  Why did God have to tell us to take off certain things?  What did He tell us to put on?  Why did He have to tell us to put on these things?  What will help us with putting on these things?

Game: Dress Up Relay

Have a relay race where the kids have to run to a pile of clothes (they should be a good bit larger than the kids so they can put them on top of their clothes), put them on, take them off, and run back to the next person.  If you have five items for them to put on have them name the five virtues in Colossians 3:12 as they put them on.

The students pass around a ball or object, each saying one word of the verse in order as they pass the ball.

Colossians 3:12 - Lesson 5 - Patience

Lesson 5: Patience
Story: Elijah prays for rain
Bible passages: James 5:17-18; 1 Kings 18

Introductory Discussion:
Have you ever had to wait for something or are you currently waiting for something?  What about a gift you�d like to receive, but have to wait for Christmas?  How about something that you have to earn money to buy?  Is it easy to wait?  What is patience?

Story:
Tell the story having the kids use the Bible characters.  Print them out and do one of the following: 
         Put magnets on the back to tell the story on a white board.
         Put flannel on the back to use with a flannel board.
         Attach craft sticks and use as puppets to tell the story

Craft:  Raining Cloud  The inspiration came from here.



Supplies: 
Ziplock bags
Paper (sky blue, white, and green)
Hole punch
Scissors
Cloud template (click here) Cotton balls
Glue sticks
Man praying coloring page
Before the lesson, use the hole punch to make little �raindrops� out of the blue paper.  Also cut a strip of brown paper to use as dirt.  Print the cloud templates.  Cut out the clouds.  Put lots of raindrops into each ziplock bag and close it (you may want to tape or staple it closed as well (so the kids can�t open them and make a mess).  Don�t squeeze all of the air out or the rain won�t fall. Print the coloring page for each kid on the sky blue paper. 
During the lesson, have the students put glue on the edges of the bag and glue it onto the back of the coloring page (upside down too, so you'll have to flip it over to see the cloud picture).  Then, glue the cloud on top of it and the strip of brown for the dirt.  After that, have them glue cotton to the cloud.  When they are done they can show the picture of Elijah praying, then flip it over so the rain falls from the cloud.  As they work, remind them of how long Elijah had to wait for it to rain.

Discussion:
How long did Elijah wait for rain?  When he prayed, how many times did he have to send the servant to look for the rain?  Prayer sometimes takes time.  When we pray, sometimes God says yes, sometimes He says no, and sometimes He says wait.  Is there something that you have prayed for that has taken a long time?  Should you stop praying about it?

Game:  Go and Wait game
What should you do while you wait?  Pray.  Play the game like red light/green light.  When the teacher says �go� the students walk toward him/her.  When the teacher says �wait� the students have to kneel to pray.

Lesson 4: Gentleness
Story: King Rehoboam and the Division of the 
Kingdom of Israel
Bible passages: 1 Kings 12:1-24

Introduction:
Read Proverbs 15:1. �A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.�  Read a children�s story book that has escalating conflict (like �Prickle Says I�m Sorry�).  Ask the students what gentle answer the characters could have used to keep there from being a problem.

Craft: 
Glue cotton onto the back of a square of sandpaper.  Talk about a gentle answer being like cotton and a harsh word being like sandpaper. (I found this idea at Not Before 7 Teaches.)



Craft: Robe puzzle � divided into 12 pieces

Briefly tell story of Jeroboam and Ahijah from 1 Kings 11:26-40.  Then have the students color the robe and cut it up into the 12 pieces.  Then, they can try to put it together again.(I found this idea at Hands On Bible Teacher.)


Bible Story: 1 Kings 12
Introduce Rehoboam as the son of Solomon.  Tell the Bible story.  Stop after verse 5.  Have them think of the gentle and harsh responses Rehoboam could use.  Continue with the story, stopping after verse 11.  Have them predict the outcomes of Rehoboam following the advice of the elders or the young men.  Continue with the story, ending with verse 24.  Compare their prediction with the actual outcome. 

Discussion:
Did Rehoboam choose gentleness?  What do you think would have happened if he did?

Craft: Split crown/Divided Kingdom craft




Supplies:
Divided Kingdom Map Coloring Page
Yellow construction paper
Crayons or Markers
Glitter glue
Hole punch
Brads/Fasteners
Have the students color the map of the Divided Kingdom and kings.  Then, cut a crown out of yellow construction paper and decorate it.  Fold it in half the long way and cut it.  Put a hole punch in the center of the bottom of the map and inside bottom corners of the crown and then secure them together with a brad or fastener. This is based on an idea from the Hands on Bible Teacher blog. 

Role Play:
 Read each scenario to the kids and then have them take turns acting out first harshly, and then with gentleness.  As some students act out the parts, have the rest hold up the sandpaper or cotton to describe their response as gentle or harsh. 
1.  Someone is kicking your chair.
2. Your brother says, �Where�s my new toy?�
3. Your mom asks you to set the table.
4. Someone is humming while you�re trying to do your homework.
5. You�re neighbor yells at you for being on his grass.
6. Somebody knocks down the sand castle you were building.

Colossians 3:12 - Lesson 3 - Humility

Lesson 3: Humility
Story: The Life of Solomon
Bible passages: 2 Sam 12; 1 Chron. 22, 28; 1 Kings 2; 
2 Chron. 1, 5, 9; 1 Kings 11

Introduction activity:
Introduce humility by having the students take turns taping the following quotes to the a picture of a humble or a proud person.

Humble and Proud Quotes
  • I�m the best.
  • I never do anything wrong.
  • I�m perfect.
  • I know everything.
  • I deserve to have everything my own.
  • I�m better than you.
  • Sometimes I make mistakes.
  • I still have a lot to learn.
  • No one is perfect.
  • I�m not perfect.
  • I have sinned.
  • Joe is better than I am at that.

Bible story:


Print out the Solomon Timeline.
Tell the story using pictures (I printed some off of the internet or you can use this pdf.)  While you�re telling the story have them graph Solomon�s ups and downs on the Solomon timeline.  After you tell the story, have them go back and graph how humble he was.  (This method of mapping the ups and downs also works well with the life of Joseph, though I didn't graph his humility).

Discussion:
When was Solomon humble?  How did God respond when Solomon was humble?  How did God respond when Solomon was proud? Read Proverbs 29:23 �A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.�  Read James 4:6 �But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.��

Application Activity:
Role play different situations.  Have one student act out pride and another one act out humility in each situation.
         Winning a game
         Losing a game
         Getting a good grade
         Becoming the president
         Getting a part in the school play
         Receiving a gift

Colossians 3:12 - Lesson 2 - Kindness

Lesson 2: Kindness
Story: David, Abigail, and Nabal
Bible passage: 1 Sam 25

Introduction Discussion:
The next virtue we are to put on is kindness.  What is the difference between compassion and kindness?  
The definition of compassion is �a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.� The definition of kindness is �the quality of being friendly, generous, or considerate.�
 Where compassion is more of a feeling and mercy, kindness is all action, taking care of needs.

Bible Story: 1 Samuel 25:2-38
While telling the story have the students clap when someone is kind and boo when someone is unkind (The same person can be both at different times).  At the end, list on a white board or poster board the different things people did that were kind or unkind.

Craft: Abigail and food on a donkey



Supplies:
Toilet paper rolls (3 per child) � cut them ahead of time
Brads/Fasteners
Black pipe cleaners
Wiggly eyes
Black tape (optional)
Scotch tape

Plastic baggies
Raisins, fig newtons, mini breadsticks, jerky 
 Here is a template that I printed (in 8.5 x 11 without borders) to know where to cut.  You just glue them to the toilet paper rolls, cut on the lines, use a hole punch on the circles and punch an awl through the dots. 
Make this donkey from Amy's Free Ideas:
Follow the directions from the website to cut the toilet paper rolls ahead of time.  Punch the holes for the legs ahead of time.  Also, put a hole in the top and bottom of the donkey so you can add Abigail (this is not on the donkey tutorial).  Have the children finish the donkey by rolling the legs, adding the legs to the body with the brads, rolling the head, assembling the donkey, adding the tail and mane.  Optional: tape the feet to cardboard so the donkey can walk. Cut out Abigail and bend her so she is sitting.  Tape the top half to a straw and insert her onto the donkey.  Put the food in the plastic baggies and tape them onto the donkey.

Application activity:
Print out the I Can Be Kind coloring page.  Fold it in thirds (like a piece of mail), open it, and then fold it in half the long way.  In each sections on the back of the sheet, have the students draw a picture of something they can do to be kind to their parent, to their siblings or cousins, at school, in a grocery store, for a neighbor, and for a friend.
